ABOUT THE VENUE
This reach of the lower Stour starts at the downstream limit of Throop Fishery and extends
down to MEXE. It changes in character as you move downstream from Iford Bridges, the upper
fishery being less influenced by the tide, with more shallow weedy swims holding chub and
a few barbel along with roach and dace. Once you get down to the Pony Fields beside Iford
Lane there are fine catches of dace and roach to be had float-fishing maggot, caster or
bread in the main flow. Roach have staged a big come-back on the lower Stour in recent
years and this is the consistent area to find them. MEXE area is deep and slow, well worth
a try when the river has extra water coming through. Pike rarely show until winter when they
congregate around Iford bridges and backwaters. A few big carp are present for the dedicated
specimen hunter.
Lower Stour (general)
CAC lease all the fishing, but access from the bank is interrupted in some areas by private
gardens. Check your maps and specific rules for this fishery. Boat fishing is permitted below
old Iford Bridge and can be useful for getting to spots inaccessible from the bank. Note that
some areas are available to non-members on a day-ticket.
