ABOUT THE VENUE
Below MEXE the main Weymouth-Waterloo rail line crosses the river. Bankside access is quite
restricted until you get down to Meridians on the north bank where a number of angling
platforms are installed, making it easier to trot a float along the nearside reedbed.
Tuckton Bridge is the next landmark and below the bridge open public access can create
disturbance making an early or late start worthwhile. Autumn and winter yield the best
catches, particularly when the river is coloured and fewer noisy people are about. Large
catches of dace can be taken between the moored boats, also roach and bream in the deeper
swims. Fishing is also available on the north bank for 150m upstream of Christchurch quay,
this area is shallow and gives its best catches during flood conditions. In summer the usual
river fish are joined by mullet and bass. A few large carp hide away in the quieter areas.
Lower Stour (general)
CAC lease all the fishing, but access from the bank is interrupted in some areas by private
gardens. Check your maps and specific rules for this fishery. Boat fishing is permitted below
old Iford Bridge and can be useful for getting to spots inaccessible from the bank. Note that
some areas are available to non-members on a day-ticket.
